i have been working hard on a short mix to turn with my red bull music academy application.

i have been having a lot of problems with it. in the midst of deciding to apply and getting things together, i have been reinspired and moved to incorporate some of a different sound within my deep houe set. i do not want to leave deep house behind, rather, i want to bring some random things into it that i love and that make my butt, and hopefully, yours, move.

this is great and i am really excited about it. however, the technical aspect of it is proving to be quite the challenge. the beats of the broken beat tracks i am playing are crazy to mix, especially with house, and even more especially in a house sort of way. meaning, extended mixing.

initially i had formatted my set, which i never do. i usually play off the cuff after simply thinking about what i am going for. i have not formatted a set record for record since the very first set i ever played in public almost nine years ago. for me, mixing records is about letting go, not sticking to a structure.

the first two takes, with this formatting, turned out really crappy. i think the cd decks also have something to do with it, because i am a novice at those, and mixing from cd deck to cd deck is really still difficult for me.

today, i recut the mix, changed up a few things, and just played. i started with the track that was giving me so much trouble mixing in, and then just went from there. it is still far from perfect. but it is a lot better, and maybe a good representation of what i am going for. i have to listen in my headphones tomorrow at work to really decide.

this whole thing is fun. getting into the red bull music academy is a total long shot, but the process of answering sixty questions about why i am involved in music, and then being re-inspired and setting goals about presenting things has been very positive. the questionaire itself is an excellent way to examine where you are coming from, and grow in the process of doing it. it feels good to be doing something, of my own accord, with my own motivation, and my mind is getting blown by all the good music i am finding.

once i am more comfortable with my lab experiment i will post a mix here.... in the meantime, you can check out my show on 90hz.org on thursdays to get a taste of what i am working on.... it is, at this point, very rough and not quite balanced the way i want it to be, but i am getting there.
