saturday night jams
saturday night was musically amazing.
valencia robinson blew me away, singing with only acoustic guitar for back up. i have heard her sing here at home in the studio with jason, but they are just getting started working together. her singing is powerful, emotional, and resonant - her lyrics, heartfelt, honest, and hardhitting.
susan marshall tore it up old school memphis blues style. not totally my kind of jam, but her skill and dedication, and her enjoyment, were very apparent and everyone enjoyed it.
men-nefer topped the night off and blew me away in a completely different way than valencia did. a twelve piece band, including a three piece horn section and 4 singers, they commanded the place. they very much reminded me of kindred, but with an immediate southern flavor, the good kind of southern.
people seemed to enjoy what i did before and in between bands, and several folks asked me for my info, so hopefully i will get to play some more random gigs. unfortunately, no one stayed around to hear any house music, which is definitely my specialty. i am not surprised... everyone usually leaves after the bands. i had a great time doing something for planned parenthood, looking forward to working with them some more.
