pnuma and more
on a total lark i went to hear the Tunnel Clones with Hope Clayburn and a band i had never even heard of last night called The Pnuma Trio. i knew the Tunnel Clones would be awesome and they delivered. good hip hop, the best in town in my opinion. and Hope just always is on point and full of so much energy, moving from sax to flute to voice and back again. really inspiring.
then i was blown away by these Pnuma people. seriously. there were actually four of them. massive setup with live drummer, bassist including laptop and some modules, guitarist including iMac, and keyboardist with a Korg, Moog, and two other keyboards. these guy are from Memphis and just got together two years ago, and have been on a whirlwind ever since, touring all over the place. it was one of the tightest live shows i have ever heard. jam band elements with all four musicians playing live as well as electronic elements throughout. all four of them were amazing individually. the drummer basically played live drum and bass, and intricately - not the broken-down-lack-of-counterpoint-crap that drum and bass became. i am not really sure what all was going on, i would need to hear them many more times, and would be happy to do so.
so it was neat to see a bunch of hippie jam band kids getting down bigtime to what was basically much like what i would deejay many years ago, but with heavy funk elements and lots of space. not a beat off the entire night. very impressive. you can find their live sets at the Live Music Archive, which is pretty impressive in and of itself.
all of this has me very inspired. a few of us are talking about starting a live band of sorts, with electronic elements. some amazing musicians with whom i would be honored to work. also about to lay some vocals for a track or two in the studio, we will see how that goes. i feel so out of practice, and pretty silly anytime i try to sing anything, but i want to push through that. no one is ever going to do it for me. i am also letting people know that for christmas and birthday i would like a small, reliable trigger for back here in my little cave, and dedicate myself to spending some of each morning working on some of my own stuff, rather than staring at my computer screen half asleep. silly for me to put it off any longer, when i know i can sing, and have a sense that i can write good music, too. and i have something to express, lots of things, in fact.
