music, i love music

what a busy few days. i have played nine hours of records in the past three nights, all of which were supposed to be broadcast. that part did not completely work out, but the gigs themselves went well.

thursday was my show on 90hz.org. i love doing that show. i am able to express myself without concern for bothering anyone, experiment, even get crazy if i want. and i had a good turnout - ten listeners. been a long time since i had that many.

friday night was the benefit at dish, with Larry Heard, Sean oD, and Brian Analog. the place looked beautiful when i walked in - exotic flowers and plants, gauzy fabric draped along the ceiling throughout, good food, a chocolate fountain, and an ice luge for shots (one of which i tasted and passed on... not my thing). there were even tshirts with the design and lineup printed on them, heh. don't think i have ever had any of my names on a tshirt, unless you count the one in high school which lists the 500 graduating seniors, and i don't.

the broadcast didnt get going until about thirty minutes before my set was over, but i started at 8pm, which is really early. there was no one but staff there when i began, but by the time i was done, the place was packed. when i was playing i think i had three listeners, and i am not sure how many folks ended up checking out the whole night because i had to shut down my computer which by then had 753 instances of a trojan virus. lovely, but i got it off the next morning with no trouble.

sean came on and really rocked it. he kept it at 120bpm and deep and funky. not long after he started david took the futon mattress off the wooden bed platform and when i looked around there were belly dancers up there. at first i thought, "man this is going to be cheesey." but it was not at all. they began by moving very slowly, maybe two percent of the speed of the music. it was very calming and meditative to me, which is always a good thing. they did pick up speed, but they would randomly go back to the slow steady movement throughout the night.

early in the night i did not recognize many people, but by the time larry went on, lots of the housers were present. it was really nice to see everyone. we shared something wonderful at melange for several years, dancing religiously every monday night. i do wish more people had danced this night, but it was truly standing room only, so just obnoxious people like karen and me danced, in the main place where people were flowing from room to room, where the sub and best concentration of sound happen to be. looks from the photos like more people danced later, during brian's set, but i was gone by then.

larry, as always, did wonderfully. just always so soulful. basslines that just fill the space in your heart, make your body move. vocals that rip you apart and put you back together. house music at its finest.

jah issac did well at nanny's but had no part in going to bed. he was not upset, he just wanted to play. he loves, loves, loves! his nanny and would not even let her rest her eyes while she sat on the couch. thanks, nanny!

and finally, last night was my normal night at dish. there was no broadcast because the server did not get switched over, which was a bummer. we are going to get everything set up to deal with it in house from now on so there are not future let-downs on that level. i did finally attempt to mix house music with the cd players, and was very pleased with the experience. it went so smoothly that i now feel kind of silly for waiting so long, but nevermind that. suffice it to say that it is on, now that i can purchase digital downloads. no more having to wait for 200 bucks to get some new music!

today, i am going to relax, maybe see about taking the linens to the laundrymat. we are so out of clean towels.

oh yeah, and buy some new house music at a fraction of the price, woot!
