learning and growing
so lately i have been playing a lot of gigs. even more this week, with gigs tonight and the following two. i never thought that ten years into deejaying i could be so inspired by music. what is mind blowing is that i am getting so far out of my self-imposed restrictions with it. currently, just for my own personal tastes and the gigs where i do what I do, i am buying house, bruk beat, and techno. then, outside of that, i have waiting list of more downtempo funk and soul that i would love to play somewhere in addition to the many grooves of that sort that i have collected over the years.
most interestingly, or most out-of-character, i have been recently exploring the world of pop music at my new gig at EP's. i took this gig specifically to challenge myself. for most of my deejay experience, i have been pretty hardcore about playing what moves me, and not really giving much concern to what moves a crowd. this has served me pretty well within circles that appreciate what i do - they groove anyway. but i am interested in learning how to move a group of more mainstream folks and still feel good about it for myself. play music i dig and they dig and also have my own style and groove. that way lots of folks are happy.
i will say it is difficult to have requests for music i do not personally like, and even, in some cases, loathe. but i have managed to keep those to the minimum and feel pretty good about things. i am also getting a great response from staff and the crowd. i substituted for SteveAnne this past saturday and was really nervous about it. i normally play on thursdays and it is not so busy. saturday, on the other hand, is slammed and very used to certain things - so i was a bit nervous. but the night ended up great. the first set i played all manner of pop, new and old, and some funk in there, too. then for the second set, a i played a bunch of house bootlegs, and they stayed on the floor til closing. very exciting to have pulled that off.
so i am growing a learning a ton right now, and it feels super wonderful. and this week, i get to play two house gigs as well, so yay!
this about covers it:

it's so totally wild for you to be playing the crazy pop gigs. I am so proud of you though, I know it is really expanding your mind on the DJ tip. You are an amazing DJ and the perfect person to experiment with styles and work them into cohesion. Love and respect.
