it is a good day
today is the Cooper-Young festival, my favorite block party of the year. i think this will be my twelfth year attending, i love it so. jah isaac is going early to play in the kiddie area. maybe this year he will actually get into the big inflated jungle gym things. the past years he has acted like he might, then said no way. and i am going to take him to see some live house music. then weezer is picking him up at one p.m. and i have the rest of the day to be an adult, or a kid, be that as it may.
must haves:
-new pottery coffee mugs, both that i bought last year have since broken
-chair massage
-something from the vintage racks
-homemade soap
-lots of people watching and hanging with my friends
and last but not least, the following amazing musicians i hope to catch if i can get my logistics between the four stages correct:
-delta groove revolution
-hope clayburn
-paul taylor and family
-jamie randolph
-feelharmonic
-rev whalum and the new olivet choir
-tunnel clones
-the bo-keys
wow, not sure how i will manage all of that. going to try. last year i had something like six hours of playing to do that day between my gig at dish and the mark farina show. i would love to play somewhere this year, but no one asked, so i am going to really enjoy not having any responsibilities.

ok, so.....
here is my immediate, upon walking in the door, report on the CYFest.
most people in memphis have no freaking clue what they are surrounded with, what they grow up within. the Bo-Keys, live, free, can you beat that? i mean, legends. willie hall SO tight on the drums i could beat mix him flawlessly. just truly amazing.
i even have a new appreciation for Al Kapone, simply because he bothered to give the crowd a music lesson, playing things such as the BarKays and Al Green, educating the people on what has come out of memphis. i cannot tell you what the heck his personal lyrics are - i doubt i will approve, but his heart is in the right place, he is coming from where he is, and doing it well.
live makes all the difference.
matt morris played and sang a couple of tracks with the BoKeys. he is really amazing. part of the mickey mouse crew, timberlake, aguilera, etc, but the one who kept it real. you can check him out here. stunning songwriting, lots of soul.
the Tunnel Clones were amazing, as were the Delta Groove Revolution and the New Olivet Choir. the last really made me want to go sing in their choir. i do not know how they would feel about me joining and not being a Christian and all, but damn they sent me back to my junior high years when i would sing gospel with the choir.

and on a totally funny side note, i saw someone with an Apollo bar at the festival, so i sought out the tv tent.
i get there and say, "so i hear you guys have Apollo bars."
the guy says, "so do you just want some candy or are you a true LOST fan?"
i said, "ask me a question, man." in other words, bring it on!!!
he asked me how the Apollo bar came about, i gave him the name of the episode and the details surrounding it, particularly Kate's reaction to eating one after something like 46 days living off the land......
and he handed me a case - 100 Apollo bars, too funny.
so if you are a big LOST fan, let me know, i will send you one, just for posterity's sake and all.
