it finally happened

jah isaac has discovered video games on the internet, namely nickjr games involving all the characters he loves - Max and Ruby, Dora, etc.

he actually sat still for a scary amount of time playing these games. i can see how it is tempting for parents to let their children just sit and do that so they can have a break. i let him play for a while and then force him to move away from the screen.

he really reminds me of myself while he is trying to do these games. he gets very aggravated and upset when he cannot make them work properly. then i get to soothe him and tell him that sometimes we just have to be patient, and that he can do anything he wants - it just takes time and practice. it is almost like i am talking to my inner child as i talk to him. parenting can be such a healing process, if we let it be.

heheh. well see how that stance on the video games holds up when hes twelve. kidding, kidding, but i'm actually a huge proponent of the video games for kids. on alot of levels, i believe video games can be a really really positive force. ya got your hand/eye, you got your problem solving/decision making, creative thinking, you got your work/reward cycle, you got imagination, patience, determination, rythm even, computer skills, and in some contexts you even got some gen-u-wine education going on. there is definitely a dark side too... my little brothers would literally live in their videogames if they could...or sean and his stack of pizza boxes for example. =]. it can easily get out of hand, but just like everything fun, its all about the balance. just my.02

absolutely on the balance thing. there are a lot of very educational games now for kids his age, and he will be doing it with me, because he still needs my help. so there is involvement. the main things to focus on are continued reading of regular wonderful old books, avoiding violent games, and getting outside and running around.
